Love-

The web definition of photography-

  • a strong positive emotion of regard and affection

  • any object of warm affection or devotion

  • Obsessive love is a form of love where one person is emotionally obsessed with another.

Starting with the emotion love was hard to start on the emotion that everyone has in their life either being love from another or love for something you enjoy. However love can become overwhelemed and obsessed which will be possesive and evil.

Renate and L.Fritz Gruber 1989. Annie Leibovitz photogrpahic sequece of the collector couple,is undoubtedly and unusual example of her work: she dispenses with all elaborate staging and captures the loving embracing couple with an apparently spontaneous snapshot. i really like the black and white images which highlight the couple in their embrace with each other. The way her head is resting within his arms shows how safe she feels with him and the comfort she feels when she is within his arms.

As love is such a strong emotion within someones everyday lives, i would like to capture images of the people that i love, or mean a great deal to my personal life. This could be family, friends, or anything that i have a passion for.

Fear-

James Nachtwey may possibly be the best war photographer to date. His work is definitely fine art as each picture successfully tells a specific story and capture so many emotions within his work. Nachtwey specializes in documenting war-torn countries. He once stated, “I’m working on a story that the world needs to know about". I found a few photographs which showed a sense of Fear within his images, such as the real-life ruins of the world trade center in America. The cold

dark image with the ruins in the backround and the sunlight shining of the dusty ground brings a sense of lonelyness and emptyness. With all the lives lost it shows how much of an infact this had on America.

When looking at peoples emotions in portraits ect, i came across an image i found the most overwhelming and had an impact on the people who see it. Nick Ut is a photographer for the Associated Press who worked out of Los Angeles. His best known photo is the Pulitzer Prize winning picture of Phan Thi Kim Phuc, who photographed a naked 9-year-old girl running toward the camera to flee a South Vietnamese napalm attack on the Trang Bang village during the Vietnam War. From looking at this image the look of horror on the childrens faces show how traumatic the situation is. This image of the girl has also been used as a cropped image of just her, this shows the symbolism of fear. This shot is most famous for the pain and suffering on the boy on right left and the naked girl.

The way the boy and girl in the backround are holding hands shows that in there situation they need to help each other, it makes us feel sorry for the little boy because he seems that he doesnt know why he is running away. The soilders in the photo have a big impact on the emotion towards the children, the soliders look like they are fleeing the children away from danger.

Envy-

feel envious towards; admire enviously is the definition of what we associate Envy with. It can also be a way of being jealous of someone or something. In this image it shows the girl
looking into the mirror looking into a image of herself with celebrities that she may be envious of in the backround. This could be because they are good-looking, beautiful, rich and famous

In my example i decided to do the same effect as the image on the left.

Richard Billingham- Candid Shots

When researching candid images. I found a photographer called Richard Billingham. He was a Mid-90's photographer who grasped his images of his troubled family. Most of his photographs were centered on Billinghams alcoholic father and his troubled brother which showed the intense ,real-life situations in his home. Billingham tried to capture that his family images were not going to be all fake-smiles but more like the everyday activities and tasks that go on in his home which makes the photographs seem so much more life-like. It seems he wants the emotions of his family to be shown to express his own emotions that he experiences at home and what his family are like. As you can see his photo's were everyday activities that encountered within his family home from his mum to the pet dog, and watching television and eating tea. i like the way Billingham captures hi s family emotions and his everyday life within his photographs. In my examples of Richards work i hope to capture the emotions in my family home and what happens in my everyday life.

Here is one image from my family shots.

Donna Ferrato-Anger

Donna Ferrato was a famous photographer in the 1970's which was the time when women took on the issue of domestic violence. Between 1976-1996 30% of women who were being effected by domestic violence were murdered. Donna had such an impact on her pictures, people were shocked to see the real-life shots she had taken. It started when she was staying with a couple (Gary and Lisa) when she herd them arguing. As she looked around the door she saw Gary in a rage and he hits Lisa. Donna captured there every move which brings a sense of reality and fear into her images. Ferrato then became part of the emergency services taking images of all the calls that the police, ambulance and fire services had recived which were related to domestic violence. It then became known that her images were brutally intamite.

The image (top left) is one of Gary and Lisa at the point were Gary hits her. You can capture his hand going across her face which for me is very shocking and overwhelming. The way Donna uses black and white in her images for me,shows the sense of colorless emotion in the photographs which makes the suituation seem dull and lifeless. But the emotions on the peoples faces and what is actually going on in the picture
makes the reader look deeper into the image.
Donna quoted " Everybody thought it was obseen that i was getting pictures of women being beaten up,they were shocked" Her quote shows how people were reacting to her pictures because of how brutal and shocking they were.
The image on the right is a bit different to the Gary and Lisa image. (Right) "i hate you! Never come back to my house" Screamed and 8 year old boy at his dad as police arrested the man for attacking his wife- 1988.

Looking at this image, you can see alot of emotions from every person in the image. The little boy is clearly upset, angry, frustrated, traumatised as he is pointing at this dad and shouting. This then reflects on the emotions within his fathers face, as he is turning away it shows the embaressed, ashamed , and disgraced within him as it seems he cannot look at his son.
When taking examples of Ferratos work i had to be very sensitive within my images as the ones she captured were real life so i couldnt be stereotypical. I decided to reinact a scence such as Gary and Lisa, some what developing a photo story which showed a sequence of images showing the emotions within each scene and person.

Here is one image that i started with :
I think the location for this image is the best effect as its old and decrepid showing the not so nice life-style within the image. In this picture i wanted to show that this person had been pushed down the stairs as you can see my make up is smudged showing an emotional scared image.
On Flickr i chose a few images that come together as a photo story like the Gary and Lisa examples. Also in my book i have shown black and white images of my images to show the effect that the colour has on the picture.

Here is an image that i wanted to interpret the Gary & Lisa images . I changed the colour of this image to black and white to show the emotionless situation within this photo.
I had to make an expression that i was scared and intimidated by the man, either being my husband or father. I told my dad to make an angry expression, instead he created a stern evil look which i think works well with the Donna Ferrato's examples. Even as Donna captured real life moments, this is a good example of this as my head is facing away showing we have had an argument or he has something to shout at me for.

Natural Emotions

When researching all the different types of emotions and which photographers showed examples of them in their work. I came across a theorist called Elizabeth Kulber Ross who empahsied that humans have five natural emotionsthat we cannot control or realise. GREIF,ANGER,ENVY,LOVE & FEAR. Are the emotions she researched. i thought that i could capture these emotions in different ways showing different sides to the emotions either from objects or people.
Expanding on natural emotions i took a few candid shots to capture peoples facial emotions without them noticing the camera. (See Book)

Here is an example of one candid shot i had taken. I like this image the most because you can see whats happening within the picture. There are 4 people within the image and they all seem to be friends, the two boys are smiling or laughing which shows they are happy within the group or conversation they are in. The girl on the left is also smiling which shows she also is part of the conversation with the two boys. This image shows a fun, happy suituation
(See flickr for other candid images)

i first started with grief which is and emotion you cannot control and people deal with greif in different ways. We usually associate greif with loosing people we love or a close one, it could also be saying goodbye to somebody. it is mainly extreme sadness which i have tried to emphasise in my images.I started the natural emotions with grief, when i came across a photographer called Maggie Steber who was a documentary photographer who has lived and worked all over the world. Early in her career she worked as a reporter and photographer for the Galveston Daily News and as a picture editor for the Associated Press in New York which reflects on her real-life images and capturing real emotions. Here on the right is an image called "A Mother's Funeral" 1987. I found this image was the most overwhelming photograph in my opinion because you are getting a real -life emotion of a man, in the middle, loosing his mother. The people holding the man up are may be restraining him as he is grieving so much. You can tell by the emotion on his face that he is crying hysterically which captures the real-life situation in this image.

The main place people accosiate with greif is a graveyard with tombestones and flowers.

I visited a graveyard and i noticed most of the graves had fresh flowers and it was all very peaceful which gave a different effect of emotions within the scenery.

Here is an image i took within the location. As you can see i highlighted the flowers at the front of the image but you can also capture all the gravestones and other flowers in the backround which shows how many people come to think about loved ones they have lost. This picture shows a sense of peace and rest within the location,it shows how people take time to make sure they visit the graves and make sure it looks nice. This image below is an image of me sitting in front of a grave. I tried to capture the emotion of people visiting people who have passed away. I didnt show my face within the picture as i wanted to capture a sense of mystery to the face that this person(me) is going to be upset when knealing down at this grave. The black and white colour contrast in my opinion gives a lonely empty effect to the picture, which may relfect how this person is feeling.

Klaus Rinke

After experimenting with portrait emotions i researched on photographers who used the same technique as i did. I found a photographer called Klaus Rinke who also used the idea of whoever was taking the picture to say emotions to him to show the emotion within his facial expressions. However he expressed the emotion within his hands and face. (See book)

I decided to look at other pieces of work by Klaus Rinke , i come across a series of photographers called "mutation" which was all his separate emotion pictures all together. In relation to this i set up a portrait shot and asked my friend to imitate some examples of Klaus Rinke's work.

Here are my examples of Klaus Rinke's work:

I decided to change the color to black and white so my photographs are similar to ones of Rinke's. I think these images are unusual and you don't know what emotion the photogrpaher was trying to acheive which makes the photos more intresting and mysterious. Here on my flickr account are the original color images of my examples of "Mutation" and other images i had done.

The first photos i took were simple portrait emotions where i could easily name a emotion such as happy, sad, angry and have me and a friend expressing these emotions. This is more like acting within the images, but it shows how easily emotions can be identifed within peoples facial expressions.

From the first photographs that were taken the expression "happy" was said, we see happy as smiling, laughing and the person looking happy. I think the white backround i used emphasises me and the expression i have in the image. i enjoyed being part of the photographs as i was able to over react on the emotions being said for me to do.

When a person is asked the most common emotions happy and sad were said alot.

After a few single shots i decided to have a friend in my pictures, having two people would show how we both reacted to the emotions that were being said to us. The image on the left is "sad" we started with the most common upset expression. But we expanded this to crying and friends being there for each other, helping each other.Crying is a common emotion related to being sad or upset. Crying can also be seen as a happy emotion.

Before taking the portrait shots i made a mind map with all the emotions i could think of, these were then shouted to me, which i then had to show the emotion through my body and facial expressions.

Emotions

As part of my A level photography project i have decided to base my idea's around emotions. For this project i will try to capture all different types of emotions that can be seen in different photographs for example portaits, emotions in people, emotions in locations, objects . Every single photograph can capture a emotion so this will be a creative chance to expand upon my ideas.
